. During the 20th century, the number of vehicles on the road reached 5,000, which today sounds like almost nothing! As the number of cars and vehicles on the roads, in 1903 the Motor car act was introduced to help identify vehicles and their drivers - and so the number plate was born.

. Initially, number plates were made up of three letters, and a random number- making them great for personalisation by matching with the owners initials. But in the 1950s they began running out of combinations and so switched the numbers to come first.

. The most expensive number plate in the UK is 25 O worth £518,000 . The number plate was purchased by a ferrari trader at auction , previously owned by Eric Clapton.

. Formally recognised with formula one the F1 is the second most expensive plate in the UK ,costing £440,000 the current asking price is £16.5m.

. The very first number plate ever registered was the A 1 plate registered in London when the system was first introduced by the Motor Car Act in 1903. The famous number plate was claimed by Earl Russell, starting the personalised number plate trend without even realising.
